Realism Illustrations

Realistic illustration falls into two categories. Literal illustration involves capturing a scene or an event where a photograph might be preferable, but is unavailable. The history illustration is the prime example. Many of my assignments call for me to summon the past by using extensive research coupled with my knowledge of anatomy, perspective, light, form—and a dash of cinematography mixed in!

Where the assignment calls for a more cerebral approach, I use symbol and metaphor to transcend the literal in order to probe ideas, emotion and the intangible. Using distortion and juxtaposition, I re-mix “realistic” images to create conceptual illustrations that communicate ideas.
